                                                                                              Eugene to Cottage Grove, OR

Thursday May 10, 2007

12:10pm  Let's see, I haven't made an update all day. I woke up early and Aaron slept in. We experimented with pancakes for breakfast. We made some really good banana pancakes. Right now we're loading up to leave. We're going to go I5 South. Let's see what happens. Headed to Ashland.

12:36pm  I'm going to go hit up Don Juan's. We walked Irving to River Road.

They gave me the 'ol manager's-not-here bullshit. Well, we're alright anyway. We had pancakes this morning.

2:44pm  Joe was nice enough to pull over for us in a Volkswagen Turbo. We waited for like what? An hour, Aaron? A little over. We appreciate it, brother. He's going to take us to I5. Everybody gets credit, man. Thanks a lot.

2:45pm  We just got dropped off at this gas station down I5 a little bit. I already asked the cashier inside permission to ask for gas. He told me, "No, but thanks for asking. You can't hang out here." There's a Denny's closeby. I'm going to go hit them up for free food. Then we'll go to the onramp and thumb it again.

3:15pm  I came to the Denny's and they're making me wait a long time for the manager. It's going to take forever and I'll probably get denied. Let's see what they tell me. Anyway, me and Aaron, we're having fun. Hopefully we'll score. The girl had told me she had to go get the manager. She'll probably tell him/her, "There's some guy here asking for free food." I had just asked to talk to the manager, that's it. She went back to get him. Let's see what he says. I'm testing these people.

3:16pm  The greedy lady told me all she could give me was a cup of coffee. Greedy asses. Man, nobody wants world peace!

3:25pm  Here at the gas station this random guy just gave me a dollar! I didn't ask for anything. He probably assumed stuff since I have a pack on. Do you see how everybody is so quick to judge? Actually, I am glad that guy was, he's helping us eat. Thanks a lot, brother. I don't mind in this case.

3:57pm  We're leaving Mile Marker 92, walking the shoulder.

3:59pm  We ate under this bridge. Aaron just found a new watch! Not brand new, but a working Timex watch. Hell yeah, takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.

4:08pm  Dan and Andy hooked us up with a ride in no-time, me and Aaron. I appreciate it, bros. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

Well, we got a mile-hop. A mile, or two maybe. Umm, Eugene No Bridge sign, Freeway South Rosenburg, Computer Tire Service, Pacific Pride gas station, truck stop, that's all that's around here.

                    In the town of Goshen.

We stopped walking about half an hour ago when we got to Dillard Access Road. We're standing here sticking our thumbs out.

5:54pm  Me and Aaron, we weren't even tired. We were seriously considering walking the five miles to Creswell. All of a sudden, surprise! Star pulled over for us! We appreciate it, Star. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

6:18pm  Star invited us over to some bar in Cottage GroveThe Axe and the Fiddle. She's buying us a drink. We appreciate it, Star.

6:25pm  Star brought us to the Axe and the Hammer. Fiddle, I mean. Toby bought us a round of drinks. We appreciate it, brother. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

I know I don't drink, but I drink so little I can afford a drink once in a while, but I don't get drunk. Plus, after this magical ride we got here, what a great change of scenery, it would've been rude to refuse a drink when offered. Plus, I like rum, arghhh. I'm Puertorican, remember?

6:49pm  Anthony hooked me up with a cigarette in front of the Axe and the Hammer, err, I mean Axe and the Fiddle. Everybody gets credit, man. Thanks a lot.

6:51pm  I am talking to Doug, who is six seven. He's got a webpage to check out. What was it? grenadachocolate.com

6:54pm  Star has something she wants to put in my book. What's up? Star: "Here's a girl who picked up two hitchhikers and I got my mace out. I mean, you never know. But here we are, and I just went in to go pee and left ya'll out here for five minutes with my purse, my car, my car-keys, you know, leather interior, You could have been on your way." Aaron: "No, we were playing with the dog." Star: "But you know what, I had no doubt in my mind, and here we are. Thank you. For giving me gift of trust."

8:45pm  Star invited us over to her house to crash. Her roommates Katie and Kevin just offered me this delicious-looking pasta. I can't wait to eat it.

10:56pm  I have to make an update. This guy Toby, he's on the radio station here in Cottage Grove. He's a DJ. I just met him today at that bar and gave him my webpage. Well, when I talked to him at Star's house tonight he said he had mentioned my website on the air three times! He just asked me right now if I wanted to tell my whole Odyssey story on the air!

11:57pm  Oh man, what a dream I am having tonight. It's so awesome how this random girl picked us up. She said she had seen me praying for a ride and that's why she turned around to get us. I mean, today the random one time I held up my hands and looked up all prayer-like and said, "Please Love, mobilize us," for like only three seconds, that was the exact same time Star was driving by and noticed me. Through the traffic she caught me standing there with Hank and Aaron. Like half an hour later this girl pulls over for us! She rolled down the window and said, "I had seen you before. You were praying or something." It was awesome I did that right then. She came back for us. This beautiful forty year old hippie girl. She's a teacher. Teaches fifth graders. And she's aware she's part of the system, she drives a car. She admitted to having many internal conflicts about that. Oh yeah, guess where I am sleeping tonight. I'm sleeping on a mattress. In a guest bedroom. I am so excited that Aaron is having so much fun too. Ever since we left Portland it's been a dream come true for him. He is witnessing the magic first-hand. I mean, today he was blessed with a watch on the side of the highway! Goundscore! All this shit is happening to him. He's seeing this stuff firsthand. I have a true believer. My sidekick, hehe.

Next day..
