Truth or Consequences to Elephant Butte, NM
Tuesday July 13, 2004
7:40am I just woke up in my motel room. I have until eleven to get out of here. I'm going to take a shit and take a chower.
8:35am I am leaving the motel. I took a picture
of the front. Umm, it's still kind of early. I'm going to walk around and see if I can bum a cigarette somewhere. I'll go to that gas station again.
9:12am I am leaving the Fast Stop. I went there and bummed a Unify cigarette. I'm going to walk to the T-shirt shop. It's still kind of early.
I just took a picture of the Dukatt71 place.
The T-shirt shop with all the CD's all over it. Last year he told me he was in the Guinness Book of World Records.
This place doesn't open until ten though. That sucks.
Oh yeah, I took a picture of the mountain with the big "T" on it. I can't find the picture now that I am typing this up on 8-18-07, but I found this one on the web. I think it's the same mountain. Like the one in Socorro with the big "M" on it. It's for mining, I think. This one is T for Truth or Consequences, I assume.
9:55am I was walking down some street in T or C. I was kind of tired so I laid my stuff down in the shade right next to this quilt shop. There was an open door and some guy came outside. I told him I just stopped to rest in the shade and he said, "I was hoping somebody walked up to smoke me out." I went, "Oh shit, you're going to like my story." I told him my story. The whole thing. Now, we're going to try and get stoned. Things happen for a reason. I came to the right place.
10:48am Steve and I walked over to this waterfront on the river. He told me there was probably kids smoking there. I ran into Tim, another traveler. All three of us went back to Steve's house for coffee. Tim and I have put ourselves on a mission to get some marijuana.
11:19am We came over to this badass tree on the waterfront. I took a picture of it(can't find picture, maybe I lost the camera). Allen is hooking me up with a beer. I appreciate it, brother.
He even gave me a cigarette. Thanks a lot.
12:20pm Cool, these people are handing out lunches at the park. Thank you all.
12:25pm We even ran into a ride from this guy Jeremiah. Him and some kids are driving us around looking for weed too. We got some food at the park and now we're trying to get some weed.
12:35pm We came to this park by the river. What was your name again? Trish gave me a cigarette. I appreciate it, Trish. Thanks.
12:59pm Man, I'm having a good time in Truth or Consequences. I met up with this dude Tim who showed me around. We're even thinking about going to the lake in Elephant Butte. We'll hang out and try to score some weed. We're driving around town with this guy. Today has been awesome.
2:22pm I'm over here at the park telling these kids my story. Alisha just hooked me up with some M&M's. I appreciate it, Alisha.
2:57pm I just had a damn good presentation in the park. I met this girl who told me, "Last night you ate one of my brother's burritos." That girl Sandy last night from the gas station, her boyfriend cooked for her and she hooked me up. That's badass. I'm known already.
Oh yeah, Tim showed back up. We had gone to his friend Charles' earlier and Charles gave Tim a blower to go sell to someone for some weed money. Well, Tim went and did just that. He already has the weed.
3:42pm This guy Tim I met at the river earlier, and have been following around, he followed through on getting the weed. He sold this blower he got from Charles for twenty dollars. He got the money and has the weed already. He walked by and I told him I was in the middle of telling these kids my story. I cut it short and just told them the spirit's part. We're out of here. Let's go get high.
We went back to Charles' and I got bored and uncomfortable. Then I remembered about the T-shirt shop. Oh yeah, and these guys have talked me out of going South. I'm going to go back up north to Socorro, then keep going North.
Wait a minute. I saw a truckstop like two miles away on the way here with Gretchen. I'm going to go there and get a ride.
Oh wait, that truckstop was two miles before the rest area. That sucks.
It's cool. We smoked two joints. I'm all stoned.
4:27pm Oh yeah, I scored at the Dukatt71 place! I called that from the beginning. Jeff Dukatt hooked me up with another tie-dye. At first he asked me if I had an old T-shirt he could dye. I've been carrying an old Old Navy T-shirt, but I wouldn't want to wear that one. It has a brand name. I'm no walking billboard. He even offered to dye my socks, but I told him no. Every sock I have almost, has a hole in it and they're going to die. It wouldn't be worth it. He told me he didn't have any mess-ups. That that was the reason he gave me that tie-dye last year. He said it was crooked. I never noticed. Then he said, "Oh, I do have one. Hold on." He came out with this awesome tie-dye that says, "Senior Olympics," on it. That's so funny. I told him I wanted him to sign this one too. He wrote, "Don't dry in a dryer, Victor. Dukatt 7/04." Oh yeah, because when I first went in there I wearing the old tiedye and he said, "You dry that in a dryer, don't you?" I told him I was guilty.
4:37pm Jeff just gave me a resource to tap. They sell these cameras for cheap. They don't have flash, so they're only a dollar. Over by the IGA. The Dollar General.
4:41pm Man, that's so cool how I just had automatic friends in T or C also. Awesome. That guy Steve I met this morning. I am sure he'd let me crash at his place if I wanted to, had to. Then I met this dude Tim at the River with Steve. He's been showing me around and believes in me.
8:03pm We went back over to Charles' and he barbecued. We just ate this delicious meal. Charles and his wife have been very hospitable.
8:26pm Tim and I are leaving Charles' house. I'm still hanging out with Tim. We're going to try and go to the lake.
8:36pm We came to the Fast Stop and Rick just hooked Tim up with a dollar for beer. Thanks, brother.
8:38pm Sandy hooked Tim up with a dollar too.
9:00pm Guess where I am. We got a ride to the lake. At the Fast Stop we offered to smoke some guys out and they said sure. Actually, first of all, when the driver came back in the passenger told him, "Hey, can we give these guys a ride?" The driver said, "Fuck no." Then Tim said, "We'll smoke you out." He automatically changed his tune and said, "Alright guys, come on." Shweet. They don't call them peace pipes for nothing.
9:09pm We are at Elephant Butte Park and I walked up to some plaque. It says, "Fort McRae 1863-1876. Located on the east side of Elephant Butte Lake. The fort was named after Captain Alexander McRae who died in the civil war battle of Valverde, NM, February 1862. Garrisoned over time by units of the New Mexico volunteers, California volunteers, the 8th and 9th US Calvary and the 15th, 38th and 125th US Infantry, the fort was intended to control a major east/west route across the Rio Grande, by blocking the Gray Canyon. The fort served as the initial resting place of Corporal Frank Brattling, 8th US Calvary and Medal of Honor recipient, 1873. The fort was ordered dismantled in 1879, and the cemetery was removed to Fort Leavenworth, KS in 1886."
9:32pm Tim and I just snuck into the marina here. Chris just caught a big fish.
9:45pm Badass, Tim and I got to this big gate that goes into the marina. We didn't see any way to get around it without jumping in the river and swimming to the other side. Then we saw there's a big hole over the gate. I gave him a boost and he crawled in. It opened from the other side. Awesome. We met these guys fishing and right when we got there they caught a big ass fish. A fifteen pounder, they said. Then they put it on the cleaning table and hooked us up with filets. Now, we're going to see if we can fashion a spit and cook them.
11:45pm Tim wants to make an entry in my log. What's up? Tim: "Well, if there is anything you want to put in the book, any piece of knowledge I may have learned in life that may be worth anything, you should definitely appreciate when you find love and not take advantage of it. You may only find it once. That's definitely important."
