Kearney to Holt to Cameron, MO to Iowa rest area

Monday October 1, 2007

10:10am  I had a crazy ride yesterday. Kevin walked up to me at the McDonald's. He told me one of his coworkers had told him, "There's a bum at the Shell station wearing a peace through weed shirt." He came over and ended up inviting me to his apartment about a mile down the street. I went over there and told his roommates my story. They ended up letting me crash. I got a good nine hours of sleep. I scored a shower last night and I'm all recharged. My batteries too. I appreciate it, guys. Right now I'm waiting for one of his roommates to come home and smoke me out. I'll try and elaborate when I type this up.

Hell yeah, last night was friggin' magical. I scored me a place to crash. I got a whole nine hours of sleep.

10:23am  I'm walking down 92 away from Kevin's apartment. I see 35 down there. Just passed Jefferson Street.

10:25am  Passing in front of Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

10:31am  Back at the Shell station,.

10:43am  I just went inside and told the girls working my story. I asked permission to ask for rides again like I did yesterday. This one girl recognized me and said, "Oh, you're still here?" I asked Kevin last night if there was any way he could get me any free food from McDonald's and he said maybe. He gave me like three of four burgers yesterday. If he comes out and hooks me up again then that's walking fuel.

10:45am  I just found out there's a library nearby. I'm going to go and talk to Kevin before he goes into work. I can see him hanging out outside about to smoke a cigarette. Then I'm going to walk to the library and check my email.

11:00am  I just got to the library.

I'm going to check my email.

11:28am  I left the library. When I left I saw some lady and offered her my website. She accepted and gave me a card of hers, some Latter Day Saints thing. She asked me how long I had been doing this, how far my trek was and I told her six years.

11:53am  What was your name? Justin, who works at the McDonald's also, he came up and talked to me and gave me a cigarette.

12:15pm  I went to the onramp and thumbed it for a while. Ahh, I got bored and just came back to the gas station.

12:23pm  Dave was nice enough to offer me a marker in front of the Shell station. I don't even need one. He's driving a Carter Energy truck. Everybody gets credit, man.

1:25pm  Dude, I just finished writing out the best WPTMJ sign I have ever made. I went to the dumpster here at the Shell gas station looking for a good piece of cardboard. I found this badass white display I was able to cut.  I made two signs. The WPTMJ one is badass. I'm going to fly it right in front of the store and wait for a cop to show up, hehehe.

1:32pm  Called that. A policeman just drove up and read my sign and he's going to come talk to me.

2:05pm  The policeman I mentioned earlier, Officer Hatfield, he is being generous enough to give me a ride to the rest area in Holt. I appreciate it, brother. I appreciate it, officer. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

2:33pm  I am at the Holt Rest Area.

2:42pm  Tim gave me a cigarette at the Holt Rest Area. I appreciate it, Tim. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

2:47pm  I just switched out to a new tape.

4:09pm  June Victor, from New Orleans, hooked me up with a cigarette at the rest area. I appreciate it. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

My signs at the rest area.

                    Zoom in on this moth.

Man, I scraped my pipe successfully once again. I can't believe. I had already scraped it like six or seven times. I had scraped it last night at Kevin's. I even shared it. Hell yeah. I'm all stoned again.

4:19pm  Sweet, I get to celebrate right on time. I'm going to ask the cleaning crew here how far the next gas station is North. They told me only seven miles. I'm going to take off. I'm hungry though. I'll eat some more pecans.

4:31pm  I'm taking off. Seven miles.

4:37pm  Highway 116 five miles. Cameron, twenty miles. I'm going to stop and drink some Riovida. I forgot to at the rest area.

4:45pm  Mile marker .0. I set my chronometer. Let's see how long this mile takes me.

5:00pm  15.22 for that last mile. I'm going to keep going.

5:19pm  I was walking along and Steve pulled over for me.

I was surprised. I was hitting good fifteen minute miles. I thought my tape recorder stopped working. First mile I hit 15.22 and on the second one Steve picked me up and he's giving me a ride. I appreciate it, brother. Everybody gets credit, thanks. Steve works for the post office. He's a mailman.

5:31pm  Steve hooked me up with a five dollar bill! I really appreciate it. I'm hungry too.

5:39pm  I got dropped off in Cameron. I already asked permission to ask for rides. She told me I could, but that I couldn't stand in front of the door. Steve gave me five dollars, which is awesome. I'm going to get me another bottle of water. I'm going to ask how far the next gas station is. I should be taking pictures.

5:53pm  I bought me some cheeseburgers. I should've bought me some cigarettes. I bought some burgers at the Wendy's here. I am only eight miles away from the next gas station. I'm going to walk it again.

5:55pm  Herb gave me a cigarette at the Shell station in Cameron. I appreciate it, brother. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

6:02pm  I am leaving. Screw this place. Eight miles ain't shit.

6:15pm  I stopped at mile marker .4 of Mile 54 right off the onramp. Oh, I didn't tell you. I attached my sign on my pack. I've had it attached while I walk.

6:25pm  Bethany 37 miles, Des Moines 130. I'm about to pass the Mile 55 marker .0.

6:26pm  Mile marker 55.0. 16.26 minutes on that last mile.

Passing sign saying Entering Davies County. Passing mile marker .8.

6:59pm  16.10 mile. I'm not going to stop. I'm going to keep going.

15.53 on the last mile. I'm going to rest here.

7:15pm  I'm going to keep going. I'm not going to sit down and rest or nothing. Alright, later.

Let me sit and rest. I don't want to overdo it on my feet. I've been hauling ass counting the mile markers. Let me get to the top of the hill and then I'll sit down and rest.

7:19pm  I started walking again. I'm going to walk until seven thirty. Only eleven more minutes. Then I'll sit down and rest.

I found me a quarter on the side of the road.

7:23pm  Man, I'm tired. I'm going to stop.

7:33pm  I am up and at 'em. I might start looking for a place to crash. It's getting dark. I took my sign off and put it back in my bag.

7:44pm  Mile marker 0. Mile 59. I'm going to stop walking for the night and find a place to crash.

7:57pm  I saw some woods close to mile marker 0. I jumped the barbwire fence painstakingly. I didn't get cut. I had to throw my bag over first.

All this time I've had a flashlight in my bag, but no batteries. I just realized I had four AA rechargeable batteries. I got them all fully charged last night at Kevin's. I've got a working flashlight now. That's awesome. I jumped over that barbwire fence and suddenly saw a huge spiderweb, that I wouldn't have seen if I hadn't had a flashlight. Umm, I changed my mind about crashing right there. I hopped back over the fence. I'm going to keep walking until I find somewhere to crash.

8:15pm  I'm going to keep walking.

8:22pm  Cool, I see a sign that says Winston one mile.

I see a blue sign for food and gas. Badass, I've walked seven miles already.

8:26pm  Jamesport and Trenton coming up. There's a sign that says North Central Missouri College. I'm going to crash nearby and check my email in the morning.

                   State Park, next right, Crowder.

     8:33pm  .0 of Mile 61.

8:36pm  Coming up on Highway 69. Exit 61. Next services, seventeen miles.

Forget about my email in the morning. That college is thirty four miles away.

8:39pm  Taking Exit 61 right now.

8:47pm  I just got to the Shell station. I went inside and I'm taking a piss. There's a restaurant next door. I'm going to go hit them up.

The girl inside told me, "No, I can't do that without the boss's okay and she's not here." Whatever. Ahh, I've got a dollar. I'm hungry.

8:54pm  Ross just walked up to me and volunteered me some money! I appreciate it, brother. Nobody's paying me to do this. Every little bit helps.

9:01pm  Wow, Ross is giving me a ride up to Des Moines! I really appreciate it.

10:01pm  I am in Iowa, people. About seven miles over the border already. He dropped me off at a rest area. Ross was going to take me all the way to Des Moines, but screw it, I'm tired. I walked a shitload today and I need a full night's sleep. It's a really, really nice rest area. I'll take pictures in the morning. I'm going to find somewhere to crash. I'm going to layer up some more. It's cold.

10:09pm  I am in the bathroom in the rest area.

Next day..
