     walking to Silver City, NM

Sunday November 7, 2004

6:32am  I woke up around six. It was freezing. I'm packed up and loaded up. I'm going to start walking. Another five miles. I ate a pop-tart.

I had crashed out at mile marker 6. Next rest is at mile marker 11.

     6:50am  Mile marker 7.

7:14am  I took a little break after my first mile. I took all my layers off. I'm naked. I'm just kidding. I'm walking.

                   Smoked some weed.

7:32am  Mile marker 8. I'm going to smoke a little snipe I found on the ground and I'm going to keep walking.

7:45am  Found another snipe. A Marlboro snipe. I'll get a couple hits off it. It's like every time I get to the mile marker there is a snipe for me.

7:51am  Mile marker 9. I'm going to smoke the snipe. I can't sit down and rest 'til 11.

I'm hungry, but I can wait two miles.

Oh, I never mentioned. The last couple of miles has been a slope going up.

8:11am  Mile marker 10. Twenty minutes.

8:29am  Mile marker 11. I'm going to sit down and rest.

     8:41am  Leaving marker 11.

     8:54am  Mile marker 12.

9:11am  Mile marker 13. Three more to go until I stop and eat and rest.

                   Passing Grant County Line.

9:12am  Silver City 28 miles. Cliff 55. Wow, I started at 45 last night. I've walked seventeen miles out of Silver City.

     9:29am  Mile marker 14.

9:47am  Mile marker 15. One more to go.

10:06am  Mile marker 16. I'm going to find somewhere to sit down and rest.

10:39am  I am leaving from my break. I smoked a couple snipes I had. I took a hit of weed and I ate. I'm going to go for another five miles. Can't rest until 21.

Oh yeah, I'm down to my last twelve ounces of water. I'm not going to have food anymore pretty soon either. I don't know what's going to happen. The universe will provide. I trust in it.

     10:49am  Passing CBar Ranch Road.

I just took a random shot of the highway. You can see the mile marker coming up. I'll tell you the mile marker when I get to it.

11:30am  Mile marker 19. Two more to go. Historical marker. "The Mccomas Incident in March 1883, Judge and Mrs. H.C. Mccomas were killed in this vicinity by a group of Kuhua Apaches led by Chatto. [something I couldn't understand] failed to rescue their six year old son who had been taken captive. This incident was part of a violent outbreak toward the end of the Apache wars."

     12:01pm  Mile marker 20.

12:17pm  Mike marker 21. I'm going to sit down and rest.

12:48pm  I'm leaving from marker 21. Next one is 26.

12:52pm  I see a sign that says Continental Divide 6355ft.

1:10pm  There's a house. I'm going to ask for water.

1:11pm  Ray, the guy at the house is giving me some traveling food and some water. I appreciate it, Ray.

     1:15pm  Mile marker 22.

Leaving Gila Forest. Wow, I walked all the way through it.

I am carrying extra weight. I got cans of food and both my jugs are full of water.

     1:39pm  Passing mile marker 23.

2:06pm  Mile marker 24. Separ Rd. coming up.

I found me a mint for my little snipe.

2:15pm  One grueling mile to go to 25.

I'm in the town of Westing. I'm not sure.

Westing Community Hall four tenths of a mile that way.

2:45pm  Mile marker 26. I'm exhausted. I'm going to rest for a long time.

3:06pm  Leaving mile marker 26. Next one 31.

Whoa, right now on the side of the highway I spotted this construction-grade metal part that has a threaded spool that closes the loop. Ah, it's hard to explain, but I'm going to keep it. I'm sure I can find some use for it.

I ate me three hundred calories of these Beanie Weenies. That guy gave me a can.

3:26pm  I'm coming up on mile marker 27. Tyrone is 9 miles away. Silver City is 14. A measly 14. I'm going to make it by sundown. I turned around and I'm twenty nine miles away from Lordsburg. 27 away from i70.

3:39pm  Cool, there's an RV park here. 500 feet on left. Bear Ridge Campground.

3:44pm  This place is for sale. Hmm, I see a couple campers. I'm going to see if I can hit up anybody for a cigarette.

3:52pm  Bob, here at the campground gave me a cigarette. I appreciate it, brother. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

Sweet! Bob's got a little Chihuahua and he's got a tennis ball! Badass, he let me have it. I'm going to get a cigarette from him for my rest at mile marker 31.

                   I told Bob, "I walk on a reward-basis."

It's so awesome how in the middle of nowhere I got me a tennis ball! Mine wore out this morning. My stick is unprotected and the shock has killed my compass.

     4:11pm  Mile marker 28.

4:31pm  Mile marker 29. I'm just now hitting twenty minutes. Can you blame me? I've walked all day.

     4:50pm  Mike marker 30.

4:53pm  I'm walking by this big side of a mountain that's been all raped. There's all these work-crews working on it. Tractors and shit. I want to take a picture, but I don't have any more. Organized rape.

                   All for the money.

                   That's over by Tyrone Road.

     5:09pm  Mile marker 31.

5:36pm  Leaving mile marker 31. That was at Tyrone Mine.

     5:46pm  Passing mile marker 32.

5:50pm  Chris and his friend picked me up in their truck. They were going South and they pulled over and flipped a U-turn. They're giving me a ride to Silver City. I appreciate it, guys. Chris told me he had seen me walking in Lordsburg and again this morning. He was headed South, but he saw me and stopped to give me a ride to Silver.

I got dropped off at the Chevron. I went inside and told the kid working my story. He thinks I'm crazy. I'm going to walk into town now. Let's see if I have some choices. I can go see if I can find that abandoned house and see if that is still squattable. Or, I can go and see if I can find this girl's apartment again. The one I had sex with last year. See if she'll let me crash there. My feet hurt.

In the bathroom I rewound my tape and I walked twenty six miles just for today. I walked like ten last night, I think. So I walked like thirty six miles total. Forty five minus thirty six is nine, I think that's how much I had left to Silver City.

I ended up on the main drag. I asked some guy where the college was. I turned left on Market and Right on 10th. He told me that down the street was College Street and I could turn left, but I could get to it this way too.

Next day..
