Monday November 17, 2008

Last night we hiked over a couple ridges and found an awesome campsite. We gathered wood and made a fire.  David woke up early this morning and said he was going to hike to the top and come back down. He didn't think it was that far.

8:00am  Holy shit, David just disappeared. He took off for a hike earlier this morning, he said he was going to hike to the top, but he hasn't come back yet. I'm getting worried about him. I've been calling for him and he hasn't answered. He should've at least be heading back by now and within earshot.

8:47am  I am really worried about David. I started hiking the trail up the mountain hoping he would hear me yelling soon. I was counting on finding him because when I left looking for him I didn't grab any water or anything. I don't care though. I'm going all the way to the top. It's not that far, I don't think. Keeping going just seems a bit more attractive than doubling back and waiting for god know's how long for David. For all I know he might've fallen off the mountain or something.

9:03am  I found David finally. I was worried. I hiked all the way up the mountain, to the highest peak in the ridge and I heard a drum. I found David sitting down snuggled against a rock wall with a little fire going, just sitting there banging his drum. Oh yeah, David didn't have any water either.

10:25am  We hiked all the way back to our camp. We need some water.

12:20pm  After a long relaxing morning at our camp, our beautiful vista-view we are descending from Turtleback Mountain. I'm so stoned, hehe. We smoked a big fat bowl of chronic. Marijuana is the key.

1:57pm  We just walked down Turtleback Mountain and Joe is being nice enough to give us a ride into town. Thanks a lot, we're tired. Everybody gets credit.

2:01pm  My mission is evolving. It seems I now have a sidekick, hehe. At least until Santa Ana. David, when I met him he had already paid for his bus ticket to Santa Ana, CA. After meeting me he decided not to go on the bus, but take off traveling West with me. Oh, and it was just perfect how right when we got to the bottom of the mountain we scored a ride into town.

2:12pm  We just got dropped off over on Broadway. I'm going to go hit up BBQ on Broadway. Let's see if they honor their tradition, hehe. I need to go to the library too.

2:15pm  Linda, on Broadway, David asked her if she could spare a cigarette and she gave us a whole pack of menthols! Can I take your picture? Linda with the nice chest, hehe.

It's so awesome how I have a traveling partner who can actually keep up with me. We're going to have a blast. See, I had told David yesterday, "You should come help me save the world. You'll have absolutely no problem keeping up with me. You've got a walking stick and everything." He thought about it for a second and said, "Okay, I'll travel with you."

"Grief can take care of itself, but to get the true measure of joy you must have someone to share it with."

8:47pm  I should make an update already. David and I went to his motel room after our hike. I had just gone to the Circle K and I filled up my bag with ice. When I came back I got real tired and crashed out on the other side of the bed David was sleeping on. I don't know how much sleep I got. I haven't been timing my sleep lately. I just woke up. Oh yeah, and before he got a new room too. They don't know anything about me. They have a sign on the door that says if anyone else is caught in the room both people will get evicted. So, I don't have to sleep in the cold tonight.

Worlds of Power. Religious thought and political practice in Africa. Authors are Steven Ellis and Joe somebody. I'll see if I can download that.

David: "This is Evangelistic [something] of the underworld. "One of the many popular pamphlets that circulate widely in Africa is the memoirs by Evangelist Mckenzie, a born-again preacher from former Zaire. Today he is a Democratic Republican. According to his own account Mckenzie was weaned by a mermaid and pledged to Satan by his father, a witch. From Satan's Claw is the title of a short book Mckenzie relates the story of his visit to the place where witches are believed to live, which he writes is reached by going underwater. In this underworld, he claims, institutions created and used by witches, including universities and an international airport supposedly directly underneath the city of [something]. This is not exceptional because he maintains every town or village in the world as some hidden activities under the water nearby. He goes on to write that of these people, the travelers are described as magicians being witches that transform themselves into white people. These false white persons will then get out of their planes and enter into bigger ones awaiting at Motombo Lake, the international sorcerer's airport to america or any other country in the world. Their purpose is to acquire jobs in this
country working as specialists or [something]

The invisible world that most Africans believe to exist may be inhabited by all kinds of invisible beings. Spirits of various sorts undoubtedly hold a [something] as described on this Indian in the count [something] the spirit world resembles the visible world and seems to have many of its characteristics. The world is described by the [someting] pepple as witches who have their own government organized in the invisble world, except that those encounter limits. In this and many other respects the visible world is a mirror of the invisible one, an accurate reflection except that everything is
turned around.

Next day..
