beliefisdoubt

Good morning, beautiful people.  Hoping this message finds you well and safe.  The other day I said I had a question for you to think about.  What is your understanding of the difference between what you know and what you believe?  How does what you know about yourself effect how you make decisions in comparison to what you believe about yourself and how does that effect how you make decisions?

I also say, mama would say, "Boy, I put faith in what I know, not what I believe."  I just ask you to think about it.  Here's part 2 of it, and I'm going to be very clear because in spite of my sincere requests some people just think too fast.  Please, just give yourself two seconds to think about what I am saying.

I think believing in yourself is important.  I think believing in who you are and what you do, and your ability to do it is paramount to success.  Just like most phrases we tend to say like Jack of all Trades or Master, Master of None.  There's a whole other part to that but we cut it off.  The National Anthem, there's a first part to it, but we don't sing the second part.  All these things that we tend to say for motivation and inspiration and yet we tend to not finish it.

As I like to say on stage, "It's not that you're wrong, you're just incomplete."  Your thoughts are not wrong, they're just incomplete...so let me finish my thought on belief.

I  believe that the root of belief is doubt.  For the visual learners, let me prove it.  Here, I'll give you a cheesy one.  Like I know that that's a tree.  I can say, "I know that's a tree."  Imagine if I said, "I believe those are trees.  What do you hear?  "I know those are trees, I believe those are trees."  "I know that's snow.  I believe that's snow."  When my son comes up to me I think to myself in a crowd I know that's my son.  Versus I believe that's my son.

You can hear it, right?  You do have to start with belief, but that is not where you can stop.  You have to keep going with it.  What is required for you to go from what you believe to become something that you know.

We are banning curriculum because of what we believe the curriculum is about.  We stop there.  We can't appreciate that the resistance isn't in arguing in what you believe, but in what you do not know yet.

There are things like, some people took it somewhere, and I cleverly did it on purpose.  Mama said, "I put faith in what I know, now what I believe," and then I asked you what was your understanding of the concept of faith.

Same thing.  There are some people who know jesus, hehe, and some people who believe they know jesus, or they have a belief in jesus, and I could pick fun at that.

\        Anyway, here's the point.  Belief is important.  I have a lot of things I believe in, but I make it my mission to go from, "How do I take something that I believe to be true and take it to something that I know to be true?  There are things I believe about leadership, there are things I believe about being a father, a partner and a good friend.  There are things I believe about my abilities and capabilities, but I can't rest on that.  I have to take it to be something that I know to be true.

That's it.  I want you think about that.  What are those things that you believe in that you believe to be true and what is it going to take for you go get from you believe it to you know it?

Now, it's a play on words, but I want you to see this differently.  The next time somebody says, "I didn't do that.  Believe me."  Okay, I believe you.  "I love you, believe me."  Okay, I believe you.

Is it Maya Angelou who said, "When somebody shows you who they are believe them the first time."  Remember how I introduced this.

What is the root of belief, as I understand it?  I'm just not going to argue about it.  If you say you didn't do it, then you didn't do it.  If you ask me to believe you, I will.  Just undertand that the behavior you see after me believing you is rooted in what you asked me to do.  That's it.

I hope this message is finding you well and safe and healthy and patient and diligent.  I hope it is finding you believing in yourself and making moves to start knowing things about yourself.  I also hope it's finding you outside, because yes, it's still snowing outside but I am happy to be out here.  As always I hope it's finding you thinking.  Stay safe, everybody.  Have a fantastic day and I will see you next time.
