                                                                                                     Ashland to Medford, OR

Thursday June 11, 2009

6:17am  I woke up about five minutes ago with only five hours of sleep. It drizzled all night last night. I stayed dry. I just threw my tarp over me.

8:02am  Up and at 'em. I'm all packed up. I took some pictures. Some guy walked by with a dog earlier and he smiled at me and I gave him the peace sign. Wait, let me take a picture of the clouds in front of the mountain.

8:15am  Leaving my badass little leveled out part in the side of the hill. I am leaving no trace except for a havethisbook.com paper. Last night right before I went to sleep I remembered that I needed to re-Shoe-Goo the compass on my walking stick. It dried good all night. The liquid level inside is going down, so I'll probably need another one pretty soon.

8:22am  Leaving. I came down the hill to the trail. I took a picture of the fallen tree where I'm supposed to go up. Hopefully I'll find it perfectly with that picture. I've got work to do at a library today. I think I'm going to walk all the way to the college and type for a couple hours. Maybe I'll see Bridget. Afterwards, I'll walk to the public library and type some more. I didn't go to the college yesterday at all. I can type for an unlimited time on a catalog computer at the public library. That's where I'll go.

Fuck, I have to wait until noon for the public library to open. Maybe I should walk to the college.

8:52am  I just got out the bathroom in front of that cool pyramid playground structure. I made my morning deposit. Butler playground.

Did I tell you that I scored me a new green North Face Vaporwick body armour type shirt at the free box.

9:45am  I hung out with all the other homebums in front of the fountain at the chamber of commerce. I'm almost out of weed, but I am still smoking people out and passing out hits. I've decided I will walk to the college after all. I could wait until twelve for the public library to open, but nah. Hopefully I'll be able to upload my pictures. Oh yeah, and I got this girl to braid my goatee for me. I gave her boyfriend a hit of weed for it. Since I don't have a little rubber band I put some ShoeGoo on the tip.

9:58am  I was walking to the college and right before the Safeway I ran into Angel who's on his bike. I hadn't met him yet, but he said he's seen me around town. I kind of stick out, hehe. I told him I was going to go check the ashtrays at the Safeway for tobacco and he offered to get me a pouch of Bugler at the Safeway. I appreciate it, brother. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

10:28am  I had an awesome presentation with Angel. It's awesome how he bought me a pouch of Buglers! I just realized I lost my CamelBak. It's not attached to my pack anymore. I remember taking if off by the fountain in front of the chamber of commerce. I told Angel I had to go and started hoofing it back.

10:34am  I walked back to the Chamber of Commerce and I have a visual on my CamelBak. I am whole once more.

12:04pm  I did some sewing projects on the bench across from the fountain. I sewed three small patches on my wallet pocket. I'm going to walk to the public library now that its open and do some typing. I am almost caught up.

12:50pm  I had a good presentation with Matty Mission in front of the library, with the red beanie on. What did you think, Matty? Matty: "I think you are telling the truth."

1:03pm  I am done with my smokebreak. I ate an eighty calorie can of Atlantic salmon. I'm going to go do some typing now.

4:50pm  I just caught up with my typing. I'm all drowsy and tired since I only got five hours of sleep last night.

5:15pm  I am all caught up and I walked into town. It's drizzling again. I should really go find my campspot before it gets dark so I'll be able to pitch my tarp good and stay dry all night.

I'm going to pass out my site in front of the Masonic walkway.

I'm going to free hug it.

5:35pm  Yet another blatant display of ignorance right in my face. These kid's mom. Hey lady, I took their picture too. It's going to be all over the internet! They've got my website too!

It was hilarious. There was a group of all these kids who came up and listened to my story. Their mom eventually walked up and demanded to know what I was doing. I told her I was trying to bring world peace, don't you want world peace? She was all, "Through marijuana? That's still illegal!" I told her they didn't call them peace pipes for nothing. She even told me she agreed with me, but she was still upset. I asked her if she would listen to what I was doing but she shook her head and started walking away. I asked her if she had always been that ignorant, that I was just testing her anyway, and yelled, "Nobody wants world peace! Poor kids!"

7:58pm  I'm hungry. I think I'm going to make my way up to the Safeway and buy some bagels and steal some cream cheese. After that I do believe I am leaving town. I am all caught up on my typing. This pretty eighteen year old girl I told my story to, Bridget, she signed my guestbook telling me not to leave Ashland before she gave me this book she wanted me to have. That's the only thing tying me down, but it's not at all. I wish I could remember the name of it so I can just download it for free. Bridget, if you read this email me and let me know the name and author, I'm skipping town. I'm going to spread my wings and fly. I need to get on the move and manifest me an internet terminal I can finish making my update on.

It's beautiful how all the factors lined up for my departure. Earlier an angel gave me a bus pass as well as bought me a pouch of Buglers, listened great to my story and gave me four bucks. Way to live up to your name, brother. I had three dollars already.

I am already on the bus. Before I was thinking I'd either walk to the Safeway or the Minute Market to get some food. Bagels and cream cheese sounded better so I made my way to the Safeway. I didn't get any bagels anyway, but I'll hold my hunger until I get somewhere else, Medford maybe. I hope it's not drizzling or raining. I've got my tarp if it does. Actually, I was thinking about after the Safeway heading to the woods to find a good place to crash, but forget it. I'm on the bus now, hungry.

8:05pm  I am in Medford. The whole time on the bus I was standing next to the driver telling him my story in his ear. When I first got on the bus I secured my pack in the back with a bungee cord and walked up to the front. I gave the driver my usual bus driver story solicitation, "Can I tell you really interesting story? Will conversation distract you?" He immediately agreed to listen and I put on my show for the entire bus ride. Like a whole hour. He wouldn't accept my website in the end, but oh well.

I am in Medford already. This town sucks. It's all boring and paved over. Nobody's out. It's drizzling real hard. I guess I should worry about getting some food somehow. I should save like three dollars for laundry. I'll go to a gas station then I'll go look for a camp.

I gave away my waterproof boots I bought in Monterey. I should've kept them since it's raining.

9:07pm  I came to this market and bought a couple burritos and a hot pocket and I am heating them up. I'm walking around trying to find a place to sleep.

9:48pm  I already found a place to crash underneath this bridge over by the mall parking lot. I saw lots of trees and then saw a bridge. Other homebums crash here, but none are here.

Oh shit, I thought the jig was up. I thought it was a cop at first. I saw these lights shining under the bridge and saw a SUV with lights on top. It was just mall security and he drove on, whew. I'll take pictures in the morning. I'm going to get my bed ready.

10:25pm  I am about ready to go to bed. It's not that cold tonight. I don't even think I'll use my sleeping bag liner. Goodnight everybody.

Wait, I'm going to eat another burrito and smoke a cigarette and smoke some more weed, hehe. That's what I'll do.

Next day..
