Chimayo to Santa Fe, NM

Monday July 26, 2004

6:42am  I just woke up in the sanctuary behind some shrine. I'm glad nobody came out and told me anything.

8:00am  Tom pulled up at the El Santuario and gave me two cigarettes. American Spirits. I appreciate it, brother. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

8:02am  Tom wouldn't listen to my story. Oh well.

At least I got two cigarettes off of him.

Oh yeah, that guy Tom told me, "Hey, how did you get here from Santa Fe? I saw you walking." Awesome. Like I say, I am everywhere.

8:05am  Juan Trujillo, he told me earlier that when he was cleaning up the community center he had found some donuts. He gave me this big trash bag full of donuts. Yummy, breakfast. I appreciate it, Juan. Everybody gets credit.

8:29am  Dude, that guy Juan came back! He gave me a coffee and a Pepsi. I am being taken care of out here at the Sanctuary. Juan told me, "This is my religion. This is what I do. I don't go to church, I just help people."

And before there had been some other guy who showed up at the Santuario. He didn't have transportation, he said. So Juan bought him a bike. Good 'ol Juan.

9:40am  This place is jumping now. All these tourists are here. In the back of the church they have this hole filled with sacred dirt, healing dirt. I grabbed a Ziploc bag and filled some up with it. It will be my good-luck-charm as I travel.

10:30am  I just made my On My Way to Save the World sign.

I stood it up at the picnic bench in front of the chapel. Nobody has stopped yet. They look at it and keep walking.

11:14am  Not only did Jamie listen to my story, she gave me a cigarette too. I appreciate it, Jamie.

11:32am  Dennis gave me a cigarette outside the Santuario. I appreciate it, Dennis. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

11:45am  Juan showed up again. He brought me over to the community center. He even paid my three dollars for lunch. I appreciate it, Juan.

12:13pm  Edmond hooked me up with a cigarette outside the community center. I appreciate it, Edmond.

12:14pm  I started asking people for rides back to Española, so I could ride the bus back to Santa Fe. I told them that then I would have to scrounge up two bucks in Española for bus fare. Edith was generous enough to hand me two dollars. I appreciate it, Edith.

12:32pm  Edmond said he would give me a ride to Española. We stopped by his house and he's smoking a brother out. I appreciate it, Edmond. Everybody gets credit.

12:35pm  Man, it's so awesome how I ended up getting smoke out. Perfect. He asked me, "Do you have any of that Puertorican weed?" I told him I didn't have any and he asked me if I was in a hurry. We stopped at his house and smoked some weed.

1:48pm  I just got dropped off all the way in Santa Fe! Edmond gave me a ride all the way back. He had taken me to the place the bus stops in Española, but the next bus came real late at like 7:45, or something. Shit, I didn't want to wait all day. I told Edmond, "The bus comes real late. I'm just going to hitchhike. Can you take me to the highway?" Then I got a brilliant idea. I told Edmond, "Hey, these two dollars the lady gave me at lunch, I will give it to you for gas money if you take me all the way to Santa Fe." Sure enough, he did.

2:03pm  I came to use the restroom at the little mall across the street from the plaza.

2:08pm  I came to the library on Washington and Nussbaum. There's a note that says, "Due to seismic mitigation, the building will be closed today 26 July 2004. For more information please call 476-5090. We apologize for the inconvenience." Damnit, no email then.

2:20pm  Buddy hooked me up with a cigarette here at the bus stop. I appreciate it, Buddy.

2:26pm  The #2 driver hooked me up with a courtesy ride to the school. I appreciate it, brother.

2:45pm  I just got dropped off by Serrillos and St. Michael's Drive. By the College of Santa Fe.

2:52pm  I am about to walk into the Fogelson Library.

When I first walked in the library I went to the front desk and asked the guy, "Do you have to be a student to use the computers here? I just need to check my email." He told me to go right ahead upstairs. Well, I sat there logging my days for a couple hours. Then, this girl comes up to me and starts questioning me, saying only students could use the computers. I told her how I had been given permission earlier. She said, "Well in the future don't do it." She let it slide. I told her, "Thank you for making the exception," and I kept typing.

Like there wasn't a surplus of unused computers there anyway.

6:29pm  Some girl Grace listened to all my stories. She even waited outside for me. I told her a lot. She was all interested in my stuff, cool. I'm walking to the tennis courts now. I'm going to see if I can round up some spare balls.

I can already see a ball in the court. Perfect.

Oh yeah, I got to type up a whole day. I typed up the day when I started walking towards Silver City.

Hmm, I see people in the court. Damn. They have two big baskets full of balls.

6:48pm  Man, this place has tons of tennis courts. Scored me two other balls. I've got five so far from this school.

Sweet, found me two more balls on the other side of the fence of some other tennis courts. Man, they're everywhere.

                   I scored eleven balls total!.

I didn't even get to check all the courts.

6:50pm  I scored a total of twelve balls today. I am ready. Now I'm walking through the school.

7:03pm  Mario is hooking me up with some food at the Parasol. I appreciate it, brother. Everybody gets credit.

I called that. I told myself I was going to go to a Mexican restaurant somewhere and get hooked up. Not everybody is that greedy in Santa Fe. This town isn't as ignorant as it seems.

When Mario handed me the food I said, "Ask and thou shall receive. The rules haven't changed. They never will. Thanks for proving me right."

7:22pm  When the bus came the driver wouldn't give me a courtesy ride. Just then, Ray, whom I had met at Ashbaugh Park yesterday hooked me up with a dollar. Ray is the guy who invited me to that smoking session in his back yard. I appreciate it, Ray.

It was Ray from yesterday that I met at the park at lunch.

I had walked down Serrillos a bit past that Indian School. I saw some guy at a bus stop so I went over there.

7:32pm  I got off the bus at West Alameda. I know Alameda is that street that ditch runs along, where I hung out the other day. I want to find those street kids again.

7:40pm  I finally found the place I was at yesterday. The cool hangout in the creek. The street kids are out here and Sean hooked me up with an American Spirit. I appreciate it, brother. Everybody gets credit.

Next day..
